A royal expert has detailed the mounting pressure Prince William and Kate Middleton have faced amid the royal family’s ongoing turmoil. From the Sussexes’ UK return and Charles Spencer’s latest memoir to King Charles’ cancer battle and former Prince Andrew’s controversies, the Waleses have had to navigate a series of challenging developments.
Another expert praised the couple for handling public scrutiny with grace, choosing to remain composed rather than fuel the growing chaos surrounding the royal family.
Expert talks about pressure on the Wales after the Sussexes return
Royal biographer Catherine Mayer does not expect Prince William to make any grand emotional gesture toward reconciling with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. However, she believes easing tensions with the Sussexes could benefit William as the future king, particularly given her view that his role is to unite the royal family.
“There is nothing to be gained by keeping [Harry and Meghan] at arm’s length in the way that has been. I know the half-in, half-out model was rejected, but there’s a lot to be gained by lessening the tension there,” Mayer explained.
Meanwhile, royal expert Hugo Vickers reflected on how William and Middleton have remained silent amid the latest royal controversies, unlike King Charles, who issued a statement addressing Charles Spencer’s controversial claims about him in connection with Princess Diana’s death.
Mayer also described Andrew’s legal troubles as a significant challenge for the monarchy. “It is probably the source of the greatest crisis that the monarchy faces, and he keeps intruding on public life.” She admitted that she never expected the royal family to face such intense pressure and turmoil.
“And William and Kate are not only carrying it, but they have to carry it. It’s a really difficult task,” she continued (via Harper’s Bazaar).
The remarks came more than a month after the Sussexes returned to the UK. More recently, ex-Prince Andrew took legal action against the police over his arrest linked to the Epstein Files.
