President Donald Trump reprimanded Rep. Ilhan Omar, calling her a “disaster.” He also criticized Minnesota’s Somali community at a Monday night rally in Ohio. Trump spoke just hours after federal agents searched the Minnesota Democrat’s home in Washington, D.C.
Donald Trump rants about Somalis and Ilhan Omar during Ohio rally
Donald Trump reserved some of his critical remarks for Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American lawmaker. “She’s a disaster,” he said. He then turned to her background, saying, “She comes in from a country without laws, without police, without military, where all they do is shoot each other… She comes from one of the worst countries anywhere on the planet.”
The president did not limit his comments to Omar. He also took a jab at Somalis living in Minnesota and mocked their spending habits. “They think they’re in Somalia where they don’t have pants to wear,” Trump said.
He continued, “They come here, they go in BMWs and Mercedes, and they like that. Somalia, they love Mercedes. They come in, they have nothing, and they’re the number one buyers of Mercedes-Benz and BMWs in the state of Minnesota. The whole thing is crazy! Is crazy! Low IQ people.”
Moreover, the rally remarks followed a raid earlier the same day. Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s home in Washington, D.C. Reports link the probe to immigration paperwork that Omar’s late father filed when she was a child. Omar condemned the search. She called it “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.”
Neither the White House nor Homeland Security Investigations has detailed the full scope of the investigation in the information available so far. Omar, who represents Minnesota in Congress, has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the reports.
Trump has clashed with Omar and with Minnesota’s Somali community on many occasions, and his Ohio comments continue that pattern. The raid on her home adds a new legal dimension to the long-running feud, and it is likely to draw more attention as the investigation develops.
