The Social Reckoning: Mikey Madison Reveals Why She Disagreed with Aaron Sorkin

Mikey Madison had her doubts about a note she got from director Aaron Sorkin for The Social Reckoning. She explained why she initially struggled with one aspect of Sorkin’s approach to the role.

In The Social Reckoning, Madison plays real-life whistleblower Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee who exposed the company’s prioritization of profit over addressing societal concerns. While preparing for the role, the actress was left confused when the film’s writer and director Aaron Sorkin advised her against mirroring Haugen directly.

“I assumed that would be the vision. But after hearing Aaron very adamantly say that he did not want me to do that, it took me a while to wrap my head around it,” Madison told The Hollywood Reporter. Despite her initial doubts, the Oscar-winner embraced Sorkin’s creative vision and approached the role accordingly.

“Ultimately, I did fall in love with the character that he had written on the page,” Madison recalled. “So that approach did allow me to have more creative freedom in a sense, which I’m grateful for. But in the future, I look forward to possibly having the opportunity to authentically and faithfully represent a real person.”

What are critics saying about Mikey Madison’s performance in The Social Reckoning

Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning has received mixed reviews from critics. Several critics have argued that the film falls short of its 2010 predecessor, The Social Network.

ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim praised the “solid performances” of Mikey Madison and Jeremy Strong, who plays Mark Zuckerberg. However, he called The Social Reckoning a movie “where what it is saying is considerably more interesting than how it is saying it.”

Madison’s performance was also praised by Next Best Picture’s Cody Dericks. “Madison inhabits her character as completely and believably as she did in her star-making turn as a Brooklyn stripper, proving herself to be a versatile actress with the potential for a robust, varied career ahead of her,” he writes.

The Social Reckoning currently holds a 55% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
