Prince Harry was booed during a rugby game at Mattioli Woods Welford Road Stadium, where he watched Leicester Tigers compete against Gloucester Rugby. Harry attended the game with his cousin George McCorquodale, who is the second child of Princess Diana’s older sister, Lady Sarah. At one point, the Duke of Sussex was briefly shown on the big jumbotron and seemingly met with jeers when fans spotted his face on the giant screen.
Prince Harry drew audible boos when he appeared on the big screen at a Leicester Tigers game
As per a report by Page Six, the royal was enjoying some beer and talking with Leicester’s chief executive, Andrea Pinchen. Harry was shown on the big screen, and, as per a video doing the rounds on the internet, he was mocked by the crowd.
The TNT cameras allegedly quickly cut away to avoid showing the frosty reception the Duke of Sussex had received. In fact, TNT commentator Nick Mullins tried to play down the extent of the damage by commenting, “Some boos there,” before the cameras pulled him out of focus.
The moment went viral on the internet, with one fan commenting, “I don’t hear anything. But he is totally trying to weasel his way back into English life.” A second fan wrote: “The crowd’s reaction may be uncomfortable, but it’s a pretty honest measure of how people feel. And the exaggerated high-fiving—does he have to turn every public appearance into a performance? Why not just act naturally?”
A third fan penned: “He wants the life he had before he left and publicly destroyed his Grandmother for money. He’s never going to have that back.” A fourth fan chimed in: “From the looks and sounds of it, people completely ignored him. As it should be. He’s irrelevant.”
