Abdul El-Sayed appeared while Mike Rogers did not attend the Michigan Senate event
Democratic US Senate nominee from Michigan Abdul El-Sayed recently debated an empty podium after Republican nominee Mike Rogers didn’t attend.
The debate happened on Fox 2 on Tuesday. It immediately became a hot topic on social media after an image of El-Sayed standing opposite an empty podium went viral. A user online reacted, “A debate stage with only one candidate standing there is definitely an awkward visual. If one side doesn’t show up, there isn’t much of a debate left.”
Another one regarded Rogers’ move as disrespectful to the voters. They wrote, “It’s disrespectful how republican representatives treat the voters almost all of them are not showing up to debates and are completely ignoring their constituents issues.”
El-Sayed also took a jab at Rogers. He suggested that the Republican had time to attend an event representing President Donald Trump in Dallas and not for the debate. He also said Rogers didn’t have the “courage” to take hard questions from the people.
Moreover, according to a CBS News report, Rogers defended his decision. The Republican candidate said he had never agreed to take part in the debate. He said, “When you have someone who’s already picked their candidate, you can’t have a two-on-one event in a TV studio.” Rogers’ campaign communications director, Alyssa Brouillet, accused Fox 2 of favoritism toward El-Sayed. She said voters “deserve to see their candidates engage in a healthy, fair debate — not one compromised by media bias.” (via The Hill)
