Jessica Lange’s First Movie in Years Finally Gets a Release Date 4 Years After Filming Wrapped

Jessica Lange’s long-delayed film finally has a release date. Directed by Jonathan Kent, the film stars Lange and Ed Harris.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night will open in select theaters on September 25, 2026. It will also receive a special screening at New York’s Lincoln Center on September 14, 2026, nearly four years after production wrapped.

The drama is an adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play. According to Deadline, Quiver Distribution has acquired the distribution rights and will bring the film to theaters this month. World of Reel reports that Quiver picked up the rights from Blue Fox, which had previously acquired them from Amazon MGM.

Production on the film wrapped in November 2022, but it remained without a domestic release for several years. It eventually premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival on February 27, 2025. The upcoming theatrical release will give audiences their first chance to see the film in theaters.

What is Jessica Lange’s new movie about?

Long Day’s Journey Into Night takes place in 1912 Connecticut and follows the Tyrone family over the course of a single day. Their time together brings years of personal struggles, resentment, and painful memories back to the surface.

Lange plays Mary Tyrone, a mother struggling with morphine addiction. Harris stars as her husband, James Tyrone, an aging actor whose financial concerns add to the family’s problems. Ben Foster plays their older son Jamie, who struggles with alcoholism, while Colin Morgan portrays their younger son Edmund.

The film reunites Lange with director Kent, who previously directed her in the 2016 Broadway production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Lange won a Tony Award for her performance as Mary Tyrone in that production.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night will now finally reach American audiences, beginning with its September 14 Lincoln Center screening ahead of its September 25 theatrical release.
