Fired 60 Minutes Editor Slams CBS Bosses Over Misleading White House Reporting

60 Minutes has recently lost numerous veteran voices. Now, the criticisms of former managing editor Guy Campanile, who was fired back in May alongside others, have reportedly been revealed.

Guy Campanile calls out CBS bosses over unverifiable talking points

Guy Campanile reportedly wrote that it was “wise to remain quiet when emotions are raw” following his firing. In a private Facebook post reportedly obtained by The Guardian and also shared on social media, Campanile appears to criticize CBS management and write about how his 34-year career ended in May.

Campanile was part of a leadership team that was dismissed by new bosses. He reportedly wrote, “I refused to be accomplices in the destruction of the most prestigious news program on American television.”

Campanile also reportedly accused management of pushing questionable material into stories. “We would not compromise our principles or reputations by jamming unverifiable notions or White House talking points into our reporting.”

“We did what reporters worth their salt do – we questioned authority… including our own bosses. That’s how the best newsrooms work,” the post continues. According to the post, those disagreements eventually cost them their jobs. “To be clear – we were told to leave because we insisted on doing our jobs,” it explains.

He also reportedly criticized the current direction of 60 Minutes by writing that “editorial independence has become a casualty of corporate priorities and ideological intrusion.”

The post continues, “Facts are increasingly treated as items in a buffet, chosen depending on specific appetite and ideological tastes.” However, it also reflected positively on Campanile’s long CBS career. “I spent two-thirds of my life at CBS. It was an amazing adventure. I saw a good part of the country and much of the world,” it also says.

The reported comments follow similar accusations from Scott Pelley and Sharyn Alfonsi. Both journalists claimed management made politically influenced decisions about CBS News reports.
