Netflix has released a new trailer for Florence Pugh’s upcoming period drama miniseries, East of Eden. The upcoming show will adapt John Steinbeck’s eponymous 1952 novel, a bestseller over the years. The miniseries comes from Zoe Kazan, who previously wrote Wildlife and starred in films such as She Said, Clickbait, and more.
East of Eden follows the Trask family across multiple generations, set in California’s Salinas Valley between the American Civil War and World War I. The story follows the intertwined lives of the Trask family and the Hamiltons. East of Eden has multiple thematic ties to the story of Cain and Abel.
What does the East of Eden trailer show?
The trailer starts with an injured Cathy Ames (Pugh) arriving at the Trask family’s home. Found by Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles Trask (Mike Faist), the former takes a liking to her, while the latter suspects Ames is hiding her truth. The rest of the footage shows the couple falling in love and raising a family, with some glimpses at the hardships faced by the Trask family across three generations.
“The thing that was really important to me was to stay rooted in the text of the book when it came to exploring who Cathy is,” Kazan told Tudum. “Basically everything that’s in the series has at least a root in the book.”
Besides Pugh, Abbot, and Faist, East of Eden stars Joseph Zada, Joe Anders, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, and Ciaran Hinds. Kazan serves as its showrunner and executive producer, joined by Jeb Stuart. Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the episodes.
All seven episodes of East of Eden will be released on Netflix on October 1, 2026.
