Ridley Scott was recently asked whether there is still a movie he dreams of making while promoting The Dog Stars. The director revealed that he wants to finally break a career-long streak by making his first Western since his directorial debut in 1977. Scott already has the script ready, but studios have been reluctant to greenlight the project because of its challenging nature.
Ridley Scott wants to do a western now
In a conversation with ScreenRant, Ridley Scott revealed that he still wants to make a Western movie, but the studios he approached are reluctant about it. He added, “I’ve given it to somebody just now to see if they would say yes. I’m trying to start to knock the wall down.”
He said that it’s a western story that takes place in early 1829. He further explained, “It’s just at the beginning of the repeating rifle and the end of the single shot. When you have a single shot, it takes a minute to reload. Already, you’re getting scouts. So, you have to use it as a club. You’re going to die, anyway. It’s minus 20 degrees.”
The English filmmaker mentioned that the story is about two guys on the Great Plains, and they receive punishment from the tribe after they do something that they shouldn’t have in the first place. Previously, Ridley tried to materialize his wish to make a Western with Freewalkers. Its production was set to begin in 2024.
However, several challenges led to the project being shelved. Scott was recently promoting The Dog Stars, which will hit theaters on August 28, 2026. The post-apocalyptic science fiction film takes place after a deadly pandemic wipes out most of humanity.
It centers on Hig, a former pilot, and Bangley, a former Marine, as they deal with outside threats and desire to find a better life elsewhere. The cast includes Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong.
