David Spade’s SNL memories continue to offer fans a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic sketch comedy show. This time, the comedian admitted he struggled with jealousy during his early years on the series. He watched some of his castmates become breakout stars much faster than he did.
David Spade admits being jealous of Adam Sandler and Dana Carvey
David Spade recently reflected on his early Saturday Night Live days on his Fly on the Wall podcast, as per Huffington Post. He co-hosts the show alongside former cast member Dana Carvey.
Spade admitted he openly felt jealous when fellow comedians landed bigger laughs and more screen time. “When you go to ‘SNL’ and then you’re hearing all these whispers of like, someone’s getting on more there, I would actively admit I was jealous.” The actor said he even told Adam Sandler how he felt whenever one of his sketches stood out. “I’d tell Adam, ‘F***, that was funny…I’m so jealous.’”
However, Spade explained that acknowledging those feelings helped motivate him instead of holding him back. He said seeing his castmates succeed pushed him to improve his own performances and writing.
The comedian also reflected on how intimidating the SNL cast was when he joined the show in 1990. Alongside Sandler and Carvey, Spade worked with stars like his close friend Chris Farley, who quickly became a fan favorite. Speaking previously on Conan O’Brien’s podcast, Spade admitted he found it difficult to establish himself among so many standout performers.
He praised Sandler for arriving with a wide range of memorable characters and said everything seemed to click for him almost immediately. Carvey’s talent and Farley’s instant popularity also made a lasting impression. By comparison, Spade said he did not have the same immediate breakthrough. Instead, he viewed himself as a comedian who could write funny material but needed more time to find his place.
Despite those early challenges, Spade spent six seasons on Saturday Night Live. He became known for his sharp sarcasm and memorable sketches. He also gained widespread popularity for his “Hollywood Minute” segments.
