Why King Charles Went Nameless Nearly One Month After His Birth — Report

King Charles did not have a publicly announced name for nearly a month after his birth in 1948. This was much longer than the wait for several recent royal babies. His parents, then-Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, reportedly announced his name just one day before his christening.

Queen Elizabeth & Prince Philip reportedly didn’t share King Charles’ name for almost a month

Royal families have often taken their time before announcing a newborn’s name, although the wait can vary considerably from one generation to another. Princess Eugenie recently followed that tradition when she waited two weeks before revealing her daughter Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank’s name. Other royal parents moved much faster. Then Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced Prince Harry’s name just one day after his birth. Prince William and Princess Kate also revealed the names of Prince George and Princess Charlotte within two days.

Eugenie has previously taken her time announcing her children’s names. She took almost a week to announce Ernest’s name and waited 11 days before revealing August’s name. Princess Beatrice waited 13 days before confirming her first daughter Sienna’s name. However, Charles’ long wait stands out because he was destined to become king.

Charles was born in 1948 to Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. At the time, Elizabeth was first in line to the throne and had not yet become queen. The couple did not immediately announce their son’s name. Instead, they waited until the day before his christening on December 13, 1948. As a result, the public spent 29 days without knowing what the future monarch would be called, according to Hello Magazine.

Eugenie explained why she waited two weeks to announce her daughter’s name. She shared three photos of the newborn and said the family spent those first weeks enjoying private time together. According to Eugenie, Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank honors three people the family loves and admires, including her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. The name also reflects the family’s connection to England and Portugal.
