Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have built successful careers outside the monarchy and no longer need royal connections to succeed. This observation comes from royal commentator Afua Hagan. Although their 2020 decision to leave royal life still affects their public image, Hagan believes their business, entertainment, and charity work show they can continue on their own.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can succeed without the royals’ support, claims expert
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced in 2020 that they planned to step back as senior working members of the Royal Family. Their decision triggered the highly publicized Sandringham Summit, where senior royals gathered to discuss the couple’s future. Buckingham Palace later confirmed that Harry and Meghan would no longer carry out full-time royal duties and would stop using their Royal Highness lifestyle.
The couple subsequently established a new life in the United States. They also spoke openly about their experiences within the monarchy through several major projects, including their interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Netflix documentary series “Harry & Meghan,” and Harry’s memoir “Spare.” Some critics say Harry and Meghan still benefit from their royal connections. However, Hagan believes the Sussexes can now build their careers without relying on the Royal Family.
Hagan pointed to Meghan’s lifestyle business, As Ever, as proof that the Duchess has built a commercial identity beyond the monarchy. The brand continues to release products, including food, wine and home items. Hagan also noted that Meghan’s Netflix series earned a Daytime Emmy nomination.
“There is a school of thought that says that their Hollywood adventures have not necessarily gone the way they’ve planned,” Hagan told The Royal Observer. However, she argued that Meghan’s ongoing work shows her brand continues to perform well. “She’s doing really well in her brand and with what she does.”
Meghan has also started using her first name more instead of relying on her royal title. During a recent appearance on MasterChef Australia, she reportedly asked people to call her Meghan. Hagan believes this approach shows that she can continue building her career without depending on her title as the Duchess of Sussex. “They don’t necessarily need the royal links to further their careers,” she added.
