House of the Dragon Boss Says the Next Targaryen Story Should Be Without Dragons

House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal recently shared his thoughts on what the next Game of Thrones spin-off should look like. In a recent interview, the veteran television writer opened up about the potential future of the fantasy franchise while also providing some insight into his plans for the future when House of the Dragon is complete.

While speaking with Collider, Condal noted that the next Game of Thrones project should focus on the fall of the Targaryen dynasty, during a period when the Valyrian family had lost all of its dragons. Additionally, the producer suggested that he would be leaving behind Westeros after House of the Dragon’s conclusion.

“I have really said all I have to or need to say about dragons and Targaryens and thrones, but I think the most interesting story left on the table is the story of the end of the Targaryen dynasty,” Condal noted, adding, “But the one told from the point of view of the Targaryens themselves.”

When asked to clarify what he meant by the end of the Targaryens, Condal explained, “I meant the accepted formal end of the dynasty with the death of Aerys II [The Mad King].”

After experiencing a devastating civil war during the Dance of Dragons, the Targaryen house sustained a massive setback to its overall strength, as well as its hold over the Seven Kingdoms. This ultimately led to the Targaryens finally losing their centuries-long rule in Westeros at the hands of Robert Baratheon, which sets the stage for the events of Game of Thrones.

At the time of writing, Warner Bros. has yet to confirm a prequel project revolving around Robert’s rebellion. However, the company has confirmed a feature-length film about Aegon Targaryen’s invasion and eventual unification of Westeros.
