Princess Diana’s reaction to King Charles’ proposal was reportedly unexpected. The late royal shared her story with biographer Andrew Morton, who penned it in his 1992 book, “Diana: He True Story.” In it, the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry shared that she initially found the now-king’s proposal a joke. However, she soon realized the former Prince of Wales was “deadly serious” about it.
Princess Diana thought King Charles’ proposal was a joke, book claims
Princess Diana reportedly assumed King Charles was joking about his proposal. RadarOnline shared excerpts from biographer Andrew Morton’s 1992 book, “Diana: Her True Story.” In it, the late princess had openly told the author about her reaction to the now-king’s proposal. Diana shared that Charles proposed to her on a call and that her “instinct” hinted at uncertainty.
During their conversation, the then-heir confessed he had missed her while on a tour in Switzerland. While she recalled that the two didn’t have any “physical affection,” the feeling was new to her. Diana mentioned how she had never been in any relationship; hence, she “didn’t have anything to go by.”
Meanwhile, Charles asked her, “Will you marry me?” According to Morton’s book, Diana thought it was a “joke,” so she laughed and played along, saying, “Yeah, okay.” “He was deadly serious. He said, ‘You do realize that one day you will be Queen?’ And a voice said to me inside, ‘You won’t be Queen, but you’ll have a tough role,’” she said.
Furthermore, the book mentioned that Diana admitted she had repeatedly confessed her love to him. But he reportedly responded, “Whatever love means.” She seemed to blame her “immaturity” for not understanding it, but later, that phrase left her “traumatized.”
For those unversed, Charles proposed to the 19-year-old Diana in February 1981 and got married on July 29 of the same year. They had two sons: Prince William and Prince Harry. Later, the couple separated in December 1992 and finalized their divorce in August 1996. The following year, the princess passed away in a Paris car accident.
