Why Dexter: Original Sin Was Scrapped Despite a Season 2 Renewal

The reason why Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 was canceled by Paramount has been revealed. Although the series was renewed in April 2026, the decision was later reversed. Following the cancellation of the series, the reason behind it has come to the forefront.

Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 premiered on Paramount+ on Dec. 13, 2024. The 10-episode first season concluded in February 2025. Despite the prequel’s renewal, Season 2 was later canceled. Paramount+ head of originals Jane Wiseman explained why Season 2 was canceled.

During an interview with Deadline, Wiseman was asked about the reason for the cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin Season 2. In response, Wiseman said, “I think that was right in the beginning. I know it was really deliberate, we wanted to focus on Michael C. Hall and his character with Dexter: Resurrection, and that was really important for us to continue that storyline.”

Michael C. Hall’s return changed the direction of the Dexter franchise

Hall played the titular character in the original Dexter series that debuted in 2006. After the show concluded in 2013, Paramount+ brought back the show in 2021 with a sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, also featuring Hall as the lead. Three years later in 2024, the streaming platform released a prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, with Patrick Gibson playing the younger version of the character. However, the show was abruptly canceled after the first season.

Season 2 was expected to continue exploring Dexter Morgan’s early years. Skydance and Paramount completed their merger on Aug. 7, 2025. After Paramount went through the merger, the studio changed its plans for Season 2. The studio chose to focus on Hall’s return as Dexter Morgan rather than continue the story of his younger counterpart. They later released Dexter: Resurrection, which followed the story after New Blood and premiered on July 11, 2025.

The synopsis of Dexter: Resurrection reads, “Dexter Morgan awakens from a coma and sets out for New York City, determined to find Harrison and make things right. But when Miami Metro’s Angel Batista arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast.”

The sequel series is expected to return for its second installment in 2026, as per showrunner Clyde Phillips. Moreover, the first season of Dexter: Original Sin is currently streaming on Paramount+.
