Caitríona Balfe joins live-action Tangled cast as Queen Arianna
Caitríona Balfe has been cast as Queen Arianna in Disney’s live-action Tangled, a remake of its 2010 animated fantasy musical of the same name. Disney confirmed the casting during D23, where the studio also announced Elliot Cowan as King Frederic and Patrick and Hugo McPherson as the Stabbington twins (via Deadline).
Balfe will portray Rapunzel’s mother, joining Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. Diego Luna is also attached to the film as Hawthorne, a new character created for the adaptation. Disney has not revealed further details about Luna’s role.
Disney has already given audiences an early glimpse of the remake. Video shown at D23 featured Croft and Hahn in their respective roles. Production is currently underway at the Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante, with newly released set photos circulating widely across social media.
The original Tangled introduced Rapunzel as a young woman who has spent her life isolated inside a tower because of her magical hair. Her circumstances change when Flynn Rider, a thief fleeing from the authorities, enters the tower. Their encounter eventually leads Rapunzel beyond the tower. Soon, she begins exploring the outside world while trying to understand her identity, but she is pursued by the villainous Mother Gothel, who wants Rapunzel’s magical power.
Kristin Burr and Michael De Luca serve as the producers of the upcoming film. The studio has scheduled the live-action Tangled for a theatrical release on March 31, 2028.
