HBO Max just pulled the plug on Milo Ventimiglia‘s latest series, but the story isn’t over yet. The cop drama’s fate at the streamer and its potential path forward reveal an interesting shift in how pilots find new homes.
HBO Max rejects American Blue after pilot
HBO Max has passed on the pilot for the cop drama American Blue starring Milo Ventimiglia, according to Deadline. Warner Bros. Television now reportedly plans to shop the project to other potential buyers. Ventimiglia leads the show as Brian “Milk” Milkovich, a hometown figure returning to Joliet, Illinois.
The character aims to save a troubled local police department while pursuing his own redemption. Jeremy Carver penned the script, while David Ayer handled directing duties for the pilot. Carver also executive produces the series alongside Brian Udovich, Neil Reynolds and Ayer.
Ventimiglia holds a co-executive producer credit on the project as well. His long-time producing partner Russ Cundiff serves as producer on the series. The ensemble cast features Kelly Jenrette, Carlito Olivero, Onye Eme-Akwari and Jess Gabor in series-regular roles.
Eddie Kaye Thomas, Paulina Olszynski, Algee Smith and Jeremy Bobb also star in the drama. Rich Sommer, Jesse Garcia, Wrenn Schmidt, Ellyn Jameson and Maisie Merlock complete the lineup. The large cast could appeal to networks and streamers looking for ensemble-driven storytelling.
The pilot was created under a production framework that HBO Max first used for its Emmy-winning hit The Pitt. That approach calls for seasons with more than 15 episodes, controlled budgets and annual release schedules. This format makes American Blue a viable option for both traditional networks and streaming platforms.
Meanwhile, HBO Max’s second drama pilot appears headed toward a much different outcome. How to Survive Without Me features Ray Romano, Kaley Cuoco and Joshua Jackson in lead roles. That family drama has reportedly shown strong potential and seems likely to earn a full series order.
