News about the production of the long-awaited It Follows 2 is officially here, a major step forward for a project that faced repeated delays. Writer-director David Robert Mitchell confirmed it this week, giving fans the strongest signal yet that They Follow could actually reach screens after years of stop-and-start.
It Follows sequel They Follow has completed one month of filming
Mitchell gave the production update while discussing his new sci-fi thriller, The End of Oak Street. He told ScreenRant the team has “just finished the fourth week of filming” and that he is “very excited” to share They Follow “when it’s ready.”
The It Follows 2 confirmation follows a rocky pre-production period. Monroe said in Summer 2024 that shooting would start in early 2025. That timeline collapsed as both she and Mitchell juggled other commitments, including The End of Oak Street, Reminders of Him, and Victorian Psycho. The current schedule aligns with reports that filming would begin before the end of Summer 2026. Naomi Ackie has also joined the cast, continuing her horror run after the upcoming Clayface.
Moreover, the four-week milestone raises questions about the sequel’s scope. The original It Follows wrapped principal photography in roughly four to five weeks. If Mitchell stuck to that same lean approach, They Follow may already be nearing completion. A decade’s worth of stories to cover could also mean a larger production requiring more time. After all, ten new cast members recently joined the project, including Jackie Earle Haley, Justine Lupe, and Michael Gandolfini. None of their character details have been revealed.
Active filming puts They Follow on track for a 2027 theatrical debut. The sequel already has distribution lined up through Neon. It will enter a crowded horror year alongside Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist reboot, A Quiet Place Part III, and Paranormal Activity 8.
The first film premiered at Cannes in 2014 and got widespread acclaim for its slow-burning dread. Mitchell wrote the sequel’s screenplay and produced alongside Jake Weiner, Chris Bender, and others.
