Zak Penn details what’s going on with Free Guy 2
A new update has surfaced on the long-awaited Free Guy 2, with screenwriter Zak Penn explaining why the sequel has yet to move forward. According to Penn, the sequel’s slow progress is the result of a creative decision rather than any production setback.
Penn addressed the status of the project during a recent interview with The Direct. Asked whether Free Guy 2 was still likely to happen, he said he was unable to offer a development update but explained the thinking behind the delay. The screenwriter explained that Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds deliberately chose not to move forward immediately after the first film, believing it was important to avoid rushing a follow-up.
“I think Shawn and Ryan [Reynolds] felt really good about the movie and felt like they didn’t want to rush into a sequel because they thought it worked for what it is… I wish I could give you an update, but I’m not sure,” Penn said.
Levy previously shared a similar perspective while speaking with Collider in 2023. He noted, “We are developing a sequel, but the truth is that you now have Barbie that has obviously left a mark about a character in a fictional world who comes to self-awareness. So, we’re only gonna make Free Guy 2 if it’s different than the first movie and if it’s different from other movies.”
Free Guy premiered in 2021 and went on to become a major success at the global box office.
