Having officially entered the business sector, Donald Trump’s granddaughter Kai is now facing her first entrepreneurial battle on the legal front. The competitive amateur golfer is facing stiff resistance from a UK brand in her pursuit of trademark protection on the term ‘Kai’ for her clothing brand.
Kai Trump faces legal trademark over her clothing brand
A United Kingdom-based fashion company called ‘Kai Collective’ has filed a Notice of Opposition with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to oppose a trademark application submitted by Donald Trump’s granddaughter.
The collective registered its appeal on July 22, arguing that the organization has been operating in the fashion sector and selling clothes under the ‘Kai’ banner since 2021.
However, the eldest granddaughter of Donald Trump did beat the UK company in sending her trademark application for ‘Kai.’ She turned in the required documents to secure the banner for clothing, entertainment, and education activities on October 7, 2025. In sharp contrast, the UK collective only filed its US trademark application in February this year.
Going by the order of submission, the USPTO accepted Kai Trump‘s application and subsequently declined Kai Collective’s request for the same trademark. As such, the UK brand has now filed a Notice of Opposition by claiming that it has been selling clothing accessories in the US since 2021.
According to Gerben IP’s founder Josh Gerben, Kai Collective can put up a strong fight against Donald Trump’s granddaughter’s trademark application due to this technicality. “So [Kai Collective] would have to go through a process of proving that they, in fact, had active and ongoing US sales for the last five years…if they can prove that, they have a pretty strong case here to blocking her registration for clothing products,” he told USA Today.
Nevertheless, Gerben lauded Kai Trump for her move to file for the trademark just one month after announcing her clothing collection. “[Kai Trump is] doing the right thing,” he noted. “She’s really taken a step out of the family’s playbook here.”
