Mitch McConnell mourned the loss of Lindsey Graham in a heartfelt statement on social media. In a recent X post, the Kentucky senator called Graham “a good friend and a great American,” adding that he was “shocked and saddened by his passing.”

Graham died on Saturday, July 11, at the age of 71. According to the preliminary examination findings from the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the South Carolina senator died from a ruptured aorta caused by chronic heart disease.

In his tribute, McConnell added, “His constituents and colleagues have counted on his straight talk, conviction, and boundless appetite for a worthy fight. The Senate will miss him, and Elaine and I are keeping his family in our prayers.”

McConnell’s statement comes amid his own health struggles. On Sunday, July 12, the Republican senator shared a lengthy statement explaining why he had been hospitalized for nearly a month. McConnell said he has mobility challenges, which contributed to a fall last month.

“Surviving childhood polio meant spending my entire life with mobility challenges,” McConnell said. “And last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital.” He also shared an update on his health, saying, “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion.”

McConnell added, “I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.” The senator also shared that he had to “deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”
