Patrick Dempsey Has a Clear Answer to Maine Senate Run Speculation

Patrick Dempsey recently revealed why he chose not to run for the U.S. Senate in Maine. He initially went on to express his love for the state and the care he harbors for its residents. After giving careful thought, he decided that he has a certain kind of leadership in mind, which he believes is what the community needs at the moment. He touched up various social issues before reflecting that he currently doesn’t intend to explore a political career.

In an opinion piece published by the Portland Press Herald, Patrick Dempsey addressed the ongoing speculation about him running for Maine office. “It’s flattering, and I don’t take it lightly. I love my home state of Maine. I care deeply about the people who live there and, like so many Americans, I’m concerned about the direction our country is heading,” he wrote, referring to many considering him to enter politics.

However, Dempsey believes that at the moment, Maine needs a leader “who leads with empathy.” He explained that it needs someone who can collaborate with people whose opinions differ, actively listens before speaking, and doesn’t unfairly use power. Dempsey described that such a leader is required who understands that the seat is not about power but “service.”

The Grey’s Anatomy alum feels education and healthcare-related topics are important for society and for him. But after he carefully considered standing in elections, he realized that politics isn’t something he wants to get into at the moment and doesn’t want to join Congress either.

“Not because public service isn’t honorable — it absolutely is. But because I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I’ve already built,” Dempsey added with a reason behind his decision. While the actor clarified that he isn’t running for office, he asked those in power to be of help to people. “Lead with humility. Tell the truth. Put people before party,” Dempsey said, sending a powerful message across.
