Christopher Nolan has announced the theatrical rerelease date for his underrated 2006 sci-fi psychological thriller The Prestige. The movie had an all-star cast that included Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, and David Bowie. It received positive reviews and did moderately well at the box office, but remains one of the less-appreciated entries in Nolan’s stellar filmography.
The Prestige gets 20th anniversary rerelease date from Christopher Nolan
Nolan disclosed during a recent interview with Fred Asquith that The Prestige is returning to theaters for its 20th anniversary on January 21, 2027. Notably, the movie originally had its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on October 17, 2006, before coming out in US theaters on October 20. It was Nolan’s fifth movie as director, released between 2005’s Batman Begins and 2008’s The Dark Knight.
Nolan co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan Nolan, one of his most frequent collaborators and co-creator of Westworld. It is an adaptation of Christopher Priest’s 1995 namesake novel. The plot takes place in Victorian London and tells a mind-bending story of two stage magicians from vastly different backgrounds competing to develop a better teleportation illusion.
Bale plays Alfred “The Professor” Borden / Frederick Borden / Bernard Fallon, a magician from a working-class background, whereas Jackman stars as Lord Caldlow, Borden’s aristocratic rival. Additionally, Johansson stars as Olivia Wenscombe, Bowie as Nikola Tesla, Michael Caine as John Cutter, Rebecca Hall as Sarah Borden, and Piper Perabo as Julia McCullough.
Developed on a $40 million budget, The Prestige made over $109 million at the global box office (via Box Office Mojo). It currently has a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 207 reviews. Brad Brevet of ComingSoon gave the movie a B grade. “With a running time of two hours and 15 minutes you will most likely begin to notice the clock, but once the final secret is revealed I think you will be hard pressed not to want to see the movie again even though you know all the secrets already,” Brevet shared.
