“Super-fan” Prince William has shared his reaction as England reached the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals. The royal heir has been a regular at Wembley and major tournaments for years. He was spotted on his feet for England’s Euro 2020 final, and he often brings his children to soccer matches.
Prince William has a message for England after they secure quarter-final spot
Prince William shared his pride following England’s gutsy win against co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City. Down to 10 men after Jarell Quansah’s red card and facing a hostile stadium, England still came out on top and will now face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
The Prince of Wales, who serves as President of the Football Association, took to X (formerly Twitter) and public appearances this week to congratulate the Three Lions after their latest victory. “Well done England!” the post read. He followed up with: “Bring on the quarter final!” and an England flag emoji. It was signed “W,” confirming the message came directly from him.
Only a few days ago, the 44-year-old Prince called the World Cup “brilliant” and said that for England, success would mean “winning it.” He discussed his passion for football on a podcast hosted by NFL star Travis Kelce. During the friendly conversation, he even joked about King Charles’ feelings toward the sport, saying, “my father hates football.”
The conversation was recorded shortly after England’s first World Cup match vs Croatia. On the New Heights podcast, co-host and Travis’s brother, Jason Kelce, asked him: “What in your mind is a successful World Cup for England?”
The heir to the throne said, “I think winning it.” When asked whether he’d “cross the pond” if England reached the final, he responded: “Definitely. If we’re in the final.”
With a historic win, England edged significantly nearer to the competition’s showpiece, in a match many called their biggest test yet. Speaking outside the venue post-match, former England star Stuart Pearce described the game as “one of the best games ever.”
