Karoline Leavitt is standing by her remarks about Gen Z. The White House Press Secretary pushed back against critics over the weekend after her comments about Gen Z sparked backlash. Rather than walk them back, she argued they had been taken out of context. Leavitt insisted her original point was about young Americans embracing socialist and communist ideas.
Karoline Leavitt defends her comments about Gen Z being lazy
Karoline Leavitt addressed the controversy in a lengthy post on X after appearing on Jesse Watters Primetime. She said “bad faith actors” had misrepresented what she said during the interview. According to Leavitt, the discussion centered on “the rise of communism on the Left.” She claimed she was responding to why some younger voters gravitated towards promises of “free stuff” from communist politicians (via The Daily Beast).
She did not back away from her earlier remarks. Instead, Leavitt wrote that the answer was “a combination of laziness, yes, and the liberal indoctrination” taking place in the education system. She argued that “far-left educators” have convinced students that “hard work and sacrifice won’t pay off,” making them more dependent on the government. She also described those views as “uncomfortable truths” and claimed more young Americans are falling for “the lies of socialism and communism.”
However, after the clarification, the backlash didn’t slow down. Many people on X said her explanation missed the point. One user accused her of brushing aside real financial struggles, saying, “People are struggling and you dismissed them as hapless rabble.”
The controversy started during Leavitt’s appearance on Jesse Watters Primetime. As Jesse Watters argued that many people in their 20s complain about rising living costs because they’ve “never had real jobs,” Leavitt agreed. She went on to say some Gen Z Americans were raised with “silver spoons in their mouths.” Leavitt stated that they had become used to “getting everything handed to them,” adding that those attitudes were not what the country stands for.
