Donald Trump’s DC Golf Makeover Could Erase More Than a Century of History

Donald Trump‘s planned renovation of Washington DC’s East Potomac Golf Links has drawn intense criticism. This emerges after the restoration threatened to demolish the cherry tree groves. The proposed blueprint of the expansion reportedly included the area containing the cherry trees, originally gifted to the US by Japan in 1910.

Donald Trump faces backlash over DC golf makeover

On June 28, Donald Trump appeared in a photograph taking a tour of the said Washington DC golf course. This took place while holding architectural plans for the rebuild.

According to The Washington Post, the redesign of the East Potomac Golf Links would expand the course by an estimated 50 acres. This would mean overtaking the riverside bicycle trail, the miniature golf course, and the cherry trees. The golf turf currently spans three courses with 36 holes. Following the rebuild, the area would transform into a single 18-hole championship course.

Donald Trump explained the necessity of the DC golf makeover via a Truth Social post. He stated, “Many of the trees are badly damaged from years of neglect, putting people in great danger from falling branches, and the trees falling themselves.” He added, “the grass is largely dead, the greens are virtually unplayable, and the Course is in very poor general condition.”

Ed Stierli, the senior director overseeing the Mid-Atlantic region for the National Parks Conservation Association, responded to the matter. He criticized the president’s plans to take over public areas in a bid to accomplish his redesign. Stierli said, “It’s deeply concerning to see that the president is carrying around plans that would essentially eliminate public access to [a] beloved park used by the public for fishing and recreation.”

He further stated, “This is an admin that says they want to prioritize public access for recreation.” Steirli added that the president did not seem to identify the priorities at hand.
