Julia Louis-Dreyfus discussed freedom of speech in art, subtly highlighting the Donald Trump administration’s attacks on comedians. She spoke about how facts are increasingly disputed, and people’s ability to trust what they perceive is questioned. Louis-Dreyfus reflected on her comedy career before speaking about the treatment of Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert in the industry.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus says comedians are the first artists targeted
During the opening monologue of her podcast Wiser Than Me, Julia Louis-Dreyfus reflected on how the truth is not taken at face value but rather debated. She said, “I’m not sure how we got here, but all of a sudden we live in a world where facts are disputed. They’re drowned in noise, and then they’re weaponized. It’s like there’s this attack on our ability to trust what we perceive.” She further adds that not taking truth as is results in confusion and a kind of “numbed stupification.”
She stated that art is often a concern for those in power, as it cannot be easily dismissed via distraction or noise. It’s also because people connect with it through emotions, according to her. As what one feels cannot be controlled, she believes that’s why art is targeted.
“I’ve done a lot of comedy in my career, and people don’t immediately think of comedy as part of the artist holding up the mirror to society thing, but of course, that’s exactly what comedy does. And that’s why it’s the comedians who go down first,” she explained. Giving an example of the comedians who went through massive lows in their professional life currently, she added, “The Stephen Colberts and Jimmy Kimmels.”
Stephen Colbert‘s Late Show concluded in May 2026. He announced his departure last year, without disclosing a specific reason. However, CBS later revealed that the show’s cancellation had nothing to do with performance or other matters at Paramount. They clarified that the decision is “purely financial.”
Meanwhile, Kimmel’s show faced a temporary suspension last year after he joked about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. He recently also came under fire for making an expectant widow joke about Melania Trump. This was ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
