Donald Trump’s beef with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reached a new level after the businessman-turned-politician blasted his European counterpart on social media by roping NATO into the matter. During another one of his weekly Truth Social frenzies, he called out Meloni as well as Italy for not supporting the US in its campaign against Iran before describing this act as a betrayal.
Donald Trump posts about NATO and Italy amid Giorgia Meloni feud
On June 21, the 80-year-old US leader fired shots at the Italian PM for not allowing her country, a fellow NATO member, to intervene in the nation’s Middle Eastern conflict.
“After spending Trillions of Dollars on NATO, Italy, and its Prime Minister, wouldn’t even think of becoming involved with the Islamic Republic of Iran and their very serious Nuclear Threat,” Donald Trump wrote in his Sunday Truth Social rant. “For decades, we defend them but, when tested, they are not there to defend us, and the rest of the World. Not good!”
The whole facade started when Trump claimed that Giorgia Meloni had “begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her,” in a June 18 interview with La7 TV.
The Italian PM responded strongly by sharing a retaliatory video message on her X (formerly Twitter) profile. She noted, “Donald Trump’s declarations are totally invented. Frankly, I am stunned. I don’t know why the US president behaves this way towards his allies,” adding, “There is one thing he should remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
Not wanting to back down, the US President once again fired shots at Meloni via a June 20 Truth Social post, where he noted that the Italian PM had asked for a picture with him “over and over” again. He further claimed that she was losing popularity in Italy, prompting her to respond again via Instagram.
In her post, Giorgia Meloni described Donald Trump’s “unprovoked attacks” as “senseless” before adding that he should be focusing on his own popularity.
