Call of Duty Movie May Have Found Its A-List Leading Man

Paramount’s Call of Duty movie may have just locked in its leading man for the upcoming video game adaptation. The studio is reportedly eyeing a familiar action star to headline the blockbuster shooter franchise’s big-screen debut.

Mark Wahlberg rumored for Call of Duty movie

Mark Wahlberg is reportedly in talks to star in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Call of Duty movie, according to scooper Daniel Richtman.

The video game adaptation currently holds a June 30, 2028, release date with production targeting early 2027. Hancock director Peter Berg is directing the project and co-writing the screenplay with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.

Wahlberg and Berg share a well-established creative partnership across several Hollywood action blockbusters. The duo first collaborated on 2013’s Lone Survivor before reteaming for Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day, Mile 22, and Spenser Confidential. Berg’s history of casting Wahlberg in lead roles makes this pairing an unsurprising choice for the adaptation.

Richtman previously reported that the film will adopt a modern setting for its story. This strongly suggests Berg and Sheridan are pulling inspiration from the Modern Warfare corner of Activision’s catalog. The sub-franchise launched its acclaimed original trilogy between 2007 and 2011 under developer Infinity Ward. Infinity Ward then rebooted the Modern Warfare saga in 2019, with its fourth installment arriving on October 23.

The Modern Warfare games follow Task Force 141, a multinational special operations unit led by British characters. Captain John Price, Soap MacTavish, and Simon “Ghost” Riley form the core roster of the squad. Fans are now speculating that Wahlberg could portray Price, the franchise’s most iconic figure. Notably, Wahlberg has never played a British character throughout his entire career.

Paramount may alternatively choose to craft an original story set within the Call of Duty universe. Hollywood is currently experiencing significant success with blockbuster video game adaptations across multiple studios. Audiences can also anticipate Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Resident Evil, and The Legend of Zelda before Call of Duty arrives.
