John Krasinski’s Forgotten Sports Comedy With George Clooney Heads to Netflix

Netflix will soon be adding the overlooked sports comedy Leatherheads, starring John Krasinski and George Clooney, to its library. The sports comedy, which Clooney also directed, will be available on the platform beginning next month.

Leatherheads to stream on Netflix next month

Leatherheads, a sports comedy starring George Clooney and John Krasinski, has secured a new streaming home. According to What’s on Netflix, the film is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on July 1, 2026, bringing the 2008 comedy to the platform’s subscribers as part of next month’s additions.

Released on April 4, 2008, Leatherheads was directed by Clooney from a screenplay by Rick Reilly and Duncan Brantley. Set in 1925 during the early days of professional football, the film follows Dodge Connelly, captain of a struggling football team that is at risk of folding after losing its financial backing. In order to save the franchise and draw larger crowds, Dodge recruits Carter Rutherford, a popular college football star whose reputation as a war hero has made him a national celebrity.

This move attracts the attention of newspaper reporter Lexie Littleton, who begins investigating Carter’s military record after suspecting that the story might not be completely true. As Lexie pursues the story, the relationship between Dodge and Carter becomes increasingly complicated, particularly when both men develop feelings for her.

Clooney stars as Jimmy “Dodge” Connelly alongside Krasinski as Carter Rutherford and Renée Zellweger as Lexie Littleton. The film’s supporting cast includes Jonathan Pryce as CC Frazier, Peter Gerety as Commissioner Pete Harpin, and Jack Thompson as Harvey.

Leatherheads was a flop at the box office, reportedly collecting roughly $41 million worldwide against a $58 million budget, and received mixed reviews from critics upon release. The film currently holds a 53 percent score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 167 reviews. Meanwhile, its audience score stands at 38 percent.
