A Massive Blockbuster & 1 Summer Flop Are Dominating Digital Streaming

A box office juggernaut and a surprising underperformer just claimed the top two spots on iTunes after hitting digital platforms. The two films now dominate the digital download chart following their June 9 streaming debuts.

Michael and Mortal Kombat 2 are at No. 1 and No. 2 post digital debut

Michael and Mortal Kombat II now sit at No. 1 and No. 2 on the iTunes movie chart following their digital debuts on June 9. Both films arrived on digital platforms as easy hits after strong theatrical runs earlier this year. PopVortex’s latest iTunes chart update confirms the two titles lead all current digital movie downloads.

Antoine Fuqua directed Michael, which stars Jaafar Jackson as his uncle Michael Jackson. The biographical film covers Jackson’s journey from the Jackson 5 through the Bad World Tour in the late 1980s. John Logan wrote the screenplay, and the supporting cast includes Nia Long, Colman Domingo, Miles Teller, and Mike Myers.

Michael earned $889.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $155 to $200 million. The film became the highest-grossing Lionsgate release ever, surpassing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Critics gave it mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes showing 39% approval from 290 critics. However, audiences responded warmly, giving it an A-minus CinemaScore grade.

Simon McQuoid directed Mortal Kombat II, the sequel to the 2021 video game adaptation. Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay, and Karl Urban leads the cast as Johnny Cage. The film also stars Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Josh Lawson as Kano.

Mortal Kombat II grossed $128.1 million worldwide on an $80 million budget. Rotten Tomatoes shows 64% approval from 187 critics, marking an improvement over its predecessor. CinemaScore audiences gave it a B grade, slightly below the first film’s B-plus.

Both films now compete for digital sales after wrapping their theatrical windows. Michael carries iTunes purchase and rental prices of $24.99 and $19.99, respectively. Mortal Kombat II matches those prices at $24.99 to purchase and $19.99 to rent.
