Shailene Woodley’s Forgotten Sci-Fi Movie Finds New Life on Streaming

Shailene Woodley’s dystopian sci-fi has emerged as a streaming hit on Peacock. After it arrived on the platform earlier this month, subscribers chose to revisit the 2014 blockbuster. The renewed interest has helped the movie find a fresh audience more than a decade after its theatrical release.

Divergent is doing very well on Peacock

According to FlixPatrol’s data for June 9, Divergent is #6 on Peacock’s Top 10 Movies in the United States. It became available to stream on the platform last week and has since been trending in the Top 10.

Meanwhile, the first three Fast and the Furious films have occupied the top 3 spots. 2 Fast 2 Furious is #1, the original film at #2, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift at #3. They are followed by Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare at #4 and Jurassic Park at #5.

Divergent is based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling book series of the same name. Neil Burger helmed the adaptation, while Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor wrote the screenplay.

The story takes place in a dystopian Chicago, where the world is divided into five factions. It centers on a 16-year-old Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who discovers that she is a Divergent, meaning she does not fit exclusively into any one faction. As a result, she becomes a target of those who believe that Divergents threaten the established social system.

The film stars Shailene Woodley as Tris, Kate Winslet as Jeanine, Theo James as Four, Ashley Judd as Natalie, Jai Courtney as Eric, Ray Stevenson as Marcus, Zoë Kravitz as Christina, Miles Teller as Peter, and Ansel Elgort as Caleb, among others.

Divergent premiered in theaters on March 21, 2014. Upon release, it received a much warmer response from audiences than from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a critics’ score of 41% and a user score of 69%. A similar trend appears on Metacritic, where critics have rated it 48/100, while users have given it 6/10.

Financially, the film experienced great success. It had a worldwide gross of over $288.8 million against a reported budget of $85 million. Its performance resulted in two sequels. However, the underwhelming response to the third entry led to the cancellation of the planned fourth film that would have wrapped up the story.
