A planned visit by President Donald Trump to Madison Square Garden has reportedly angered New York Knicks supporters. The security requirements for his attendance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals have forced organizers to scrap a long-established outdoor fan gathering. However, it has drawn criticism from a fanbase waiting decades for this moment.
Donald Trump called out by Knicks fans over MSG party cancelation
The New York Knicks will host the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night at Madison Square Garden, holding a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. It is the franchise’s first NBA Finals home game since 1999, an occasion that had promised a carnival atmosphere around the famous arena. Instead, fans coming in Midtown Manhattan will face street closures, strict entry protocols, and an instruction to arrive two hours before tipoff.
Team owner James Dolan extended the invitation to Donald Trump, whose attendance triggers mandatory Secret Service security operations. MSG and the agency jointly announced that a no-bag policy would be enforced. In turn, the outdoor watch party, a staple for supporters priced out of the $9,000 starting tickets, would not take place.
The Knicks Memes fan account captured the mood of many. “It doesn’t matter who you voted for,” the account posted. “Banning the great vibes outside MSG before, during & after games, especially on a night the Knicks play their first NBA Finals Home Game in 27 years, objectively sucks.” The account added that national security matters, but the situation still “sucks” for ordinary fans.
Another prominent Knicks account, THE GARDEN IS ROCKING, warned that the heightened measures would harm the team’s home-court advantage. “Trump forcing everyone else to arrive two hours early just so he can attend is going to suck all the energy out of the Garden,” the account wrote, further comparing the expected scene to “LaGuardia during a TSA strike.” That reference alluded to official warnings of “TSA-style screening procedures” at every entrance.
The Knicks, chasing their first championship since 1973, will also see Democratic Socialist politician Zohran Mamdani and streamer Hasan Piker in the crowd. The White House hasn’t posted a statement on the backlash.
