The comedy movie Funny People, starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen in the lead roles, will soon become available for streaming on Netflix. The film came out in 2009, and while it garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, it underperformed at the box office. Sandler portrays George Simmons in the film, a stand-up comedian turned movie star. Following a leukemia diagnosis, George returns to his comedic roots and encounters Rogen’s Ira Wright, an aspiring comic.
Funny People streams on Netflix in June
Funny People debuts on Netflix on June 9, 2026. Some of the other projects debuting on the streaming service that day are America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Season 3, Thai drama show Strong Will, Beavis and Butt-head: The Mike Judge Collection Vol. 1-3, and Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head Seasons 1 and 2 (via What’s on Netflix).
According to Box Office Mojo, Funny People earned $71 million globally at the box office against a $75 million budget. However, it received positive reviews from many critics and currently has a 69% approval rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 233 reviews. Catherine Searcey of Loud and Clear Reviews called Funny People writer-director Judd Apatow’s “most underrated” movie before noting that it “bears a resemblance to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal work The Great Gatsby” due to the relationship between George and Ira.
Meanwhile, Joshua Starnes of ComingSoon.net observed, “There’s a lot to like about Funny People, and if it never works completely, it works in a lot of small ways, and those are usually the most important ones because they’re the ones we always overlook. It’s no laugh riot, and it’s no masterpiece, but Funny People probably deserves not to be overlooked.”
Besides Sandler and Rogen, the film’s cast also includes Leslie Mann as Laura, Eric Bana as Clarke, Jonah Hill as Leo Koenig, Jason Schwartzman as Mark Taylor Jackson, Aubrey Plaza as Daisy Danby, and Aziz Ansari as Randy Springs.
