Donald Trump Faces Backlash From Critics After ‘Dozing Off’ in Oval Office

Donald Trump is facing renewed scrutiny after clips from an Oval Office event spread online. Several critics claimed the president appeared to struggle to stay awake during the appearance. The footage quickly fueled debate across social media and even prompted fresh calls from some lawmakers for action. The controversy grew as critics pointed to other remarks Trump made during the event that they described as concerning.

Critics call out Donald Trump for seemingly falling asleep in Oval Office

Much of the online reaction centered on video clips that appeared to show Donald Trump briefly closing his eyes while others were speaking. The footage sparked a wave of criticism, with opponents questioning the president’s health and ability to carry out his duties.

Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari was among the most vocal critics. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she said Trump appeared to fall asleep repeatedly during the Oval Office event and argued that his condition raised serious concerns. Ansari reiterated her support for invoking the 25th Amendment, calling the situation a “national security crisis” and saying the president should be removed from office.

California Rep. Ted Lieu also questioned Trump’s condition. He wrote that the president “can’t stay awake” during key White House events and cabinet meetings. Lieu further urged the administration to explain Trump’s hospital visits and why he continues to undergo cognitive testing.

Medical commentator Jonathan Reiner added to the discussion, writing, “A glaring omission from the president’s recent physical examination is any mention of his sleep disorder. This is not normal.”

The criticism came after Trump claimed he likely would have won all 50 states in the 2024 election if there had been what he called an “honest count” (via Huffpost). Official election results show he carried 31 states. He also discussed a proposed pathway between the Lincoln Memorial and the Potomac River that he said some people wanted to name the “Trump Promenade.”
