Scott Pelley Responds to 60 Minutes Firing, Warns of ‘Collapse of Values’

Scott Pelley has finally addressed his firing from 60 Minutes. His sudden dismissal is the fourth big exit from CBS since February. Pelley accused the new leadership at CBS News of dismantling editorial standards and pushing politically motivated coverage.

Scott Pelley, who spent 37 years at the network, said he no longer recognizes the institution that once defined American broadcast journalism. His firing follows weeks of upheaval under Paramount Skydance, which recently installed a new editorial team led by Bari Weiss.

The correspondent’s statement detailed what he described as a systematic erosion of the program’s integrity. The breaking point came on Monday during a heated public argument with Nick Bilton, a former technology journalist appointed by Weiss just days earlier. CBS News confirmed Pelley’s termination the following evening, stating both sides concluded they could not work together.

“Last month, 60 Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause,” Pelley said. “Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos.”

Pelley made specific allegations of editorial interference. He claimed new management instructed him “to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story” and to “include assertions that are unverified.” He said he had managed to resist these demands until now, but the pressure had become untenable.

He further added, “Most of the men and women of CBS News are still in that fight. But now the collapse of values at the top has become untenable. The leadership of 60 Minutes is no longer recognizable. The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well.”

“Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast,” he added. “Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done (via Variety).”

Paramount Skydance has made no secret of its desire to reshape CBS News. The company has shown change in editorial direction since completing its takeover, and the appointments of Weiss and Bilton represent a clear break from the news division’s traditional leadership structure.

Scott Pelley ended his statement with a tribute to colleagues rather than a condemnation of management.
