Tom Holland’s Fred Astaire Movie Gets Exciting Production Update

Tom Holland has provided an exciting update on his upcoming Fred Astaire biopic. The movie was announced over four years ago, but movement on its development has been slow. However, the actor recently confirmed that it’s closer than fans think.

What is the update on Tom Holland’s Fred Astaire movie?

In a GQ profile on Holland’s upcoming film The Odyssey, the actor provided a promising update on the Fred Astaire movie. The outlet writes, “In January he will hopefully shoot the long-rumored Fred Astaire biopic he’s been developing.”

However, Holland also stressed that he doesn’t want to overwork himself following the Fred Astaire biopic. “Then take the rest of the year to just let the dust settle,” said Holland. “I don’t want to fall into the same mistakes I made as a young kid, which is this insatiable desire to just work, work, work, work, work. I want to work on the right projects with the right people. So I think just kind of: one day at a time.”

If filming begins in January 2027, a 2028 release appears possible. As previously reported, Sony has tapped Paddington director Paul King to helm the movie. Holland also revealed on the Good Hang podcast (via World of Reel) that dance rehearsals were already underway as he prepared to step into Astaire’s shoes.

Fred Astaire was a multi-talented American actor, dancer, singer, and choreographer who was active from the 1930s to the early 1980s. Astaire is widely regarded as one of the greatest dancers in film history. The icon starred in multiple Broadway musicals, musical films, and TV specials. He received further recognition for his dancing skills in classics like 1942’s Holiday Inn, 1948’s Easter Parade, 1953’s The Band Wagon, 1957’s Funny Face, and more.

Of course, Holland is no stranger to dancing, beginning his career in the West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical at age 13. The actor also showed off his dancing skills during a 2017 episode of the Lip Sync Battle, performing a mashup of “Singin’ in the Rain” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.”

The Fred Astaire biopic currently doesn’t have a release date. Holland’s next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releases in theaters on July 31, 2
