As Apple TV‘s newest comedy-horror offering enjoys its streaming success, acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has shared his opinion of it. Taking to social media, he made his admiration for the series crystal clear.

Guillermo del Toro gives Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay his stamp of approval

On X (formerly Twitter), del Toro showered considerable praise on Widow’s Bay. He wrote, “If I may- in my estimation- #WidowsBay may very well be the best streaming series in a long time… and hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror.”

The director’s comments come as the show continues to top streaming charts. As of June 1, 2026, according to FlixPatrol, Widow’s Bay holds the #2 spot on Apple TV in the United States in both the TV show and overall categories, surpassed only by Jon Hamm’s Your Friends & Neighbors. Moreover, it is the #3 TV show worldwide behind both the latter, which has the top position, and Star City, which rests at #2.

The show has garnered widespread critical acclaim. As of the time of writing, it displays an impressive “certified fresh” 97% approval rating and a similarly remarkable 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, Metacritic has assigned it a Metascore of 78, which indicates “generally favorable” reception, and a user score of 8.6, which denotes “universal acclaim.”

Katie Dippold, who previously worked on the popular NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation and Sandra Bullock’s The Heat, created Widow’s Bay. The story takes place in the eponymous fictional town in New England. It revolves around the mayor, Tom Loftis, who aims to bring tourism to the place, despite residents claiming that the island is cursed, which he is skeptical of. Loftis soon encounters supernatural activity that lends credence to the inhabitants’ claims.

Matthew Rhys stars as Loftis. Meanwhile, other members of the main cast include Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, and Stephen Root. Additional cast members in supporting roles include K Callan, Kylie McNeill, Beck Nolan, Neil Casey, Christian Clemenson, and Hamish Linklater, among others.
