Harrison Ford nearly never wore Indiana Jones’ famous fedora. A well-known filmmaker has revealed that another actor was actually offered the role first. The surprising casting story recently came to light as the director looked back on how one of Hollywood’s most iconic movie heroes almost ended up in very different hands.
Harrison Ford wasn’t the first choice for the Indiana Jones role
Before production began on 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spielberg and fellow creator George Lucas spent considerable time searching for the right actor to play Indiana Jones. Speaking on the IMO podcast with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Spielberg revealed that actor Tom Selleck won them over during auditions.
According to Spielberg, both he and Lucas tested several actors before agreeing that Selleck was the ideal choice. “We wanted Tom. We gave Tom the part,” Spielberg said. He also joked that if Selleck had taken the role, he would not have been allowed to keep his trademark mustache for the movie.
The plan ultimately fell apart because of Selleck’s commitment to CBS. At the time, the actor was tied to Magnum P.I., and contractual obligations prevented him from joining the film. With the television series moving ahead, the timing simply did not work.
That unexpected setback opened the door for Harrison Ford. Spielberg recalled watching an early screening of The Empire Strikes Back alongside Lucas and suggesting Ford for the role. Lucas initially hesitated because audiences already knew Ford as Han Solo, but Spielberg believed the actor could successfully take on another major character. Not long afterward, Lucas sent Ford the script, and the actor signed on.
Looking back, the decision changed movie history. Ford went on to headline five Indiana Jones films, beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark and ending with 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The franchise expanded far beyond theaters, spawning television shows, video games, books, and theme park attractions.
Meanwhile, Spielberg made it clear he still holds Selleck in high regard, calling him “a great guy” and saying he adores him.
