The mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, drew immense attention on Wednesday when he attended Eid al-Adha prayers in the Bronx while sporting an Arsenal-themed kurta. This was shortly after the English team lifted their first Premier League title in decades. Mamdani has been an avid supporter of Arsenal since he was ten years old.
Zohran Mamdani rocks Arsenal Kurta on Eid
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani recently shocked citizens across the country as he appeared in an Arsenal-themed kurta at Eid al-Adha prayers in the Bronx (via BBC). The images of Mamdani sporting the unique loose-fitting tunic based on Arsenal’s 2025-26 navy and red lightning bolt away shirt have gone viral online.
The kurta also sported Arsenal’s logo and the brand logo.
Mamdani started supporting Arsenal at the age of 10 when his uncle bought him a set of fridge magnets with the images of Arsenal legends. This included Sylvain Wiltord, David Seaman, Sol Campbell, and Thierry Henry.
Mamdani’s appearance came after Arsenal ended its long major trophy drought this year with a Premier League victory. Before this season, Arsenal finished second three times in a row, twice behind Manchester City and once behind Liverpool.
Though the Premier League is over, the season is not yet over for Arsenal. They play PSG for the most prestigious club title in the world, the UEFA Champions League, on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Zohran Mamdani’s football fascination goes beyond just supporting Arsenal. The Mayor is a shareholder in Real Oviedo. He was one of the 20,000 people to get involved in an international share-buying campaign, which saved the club from bankruptcy.
Moreover, he impressed social media followers with his ability to name obscure footballers from the 1990s.
Mamdani recently announced a lottery for 1,000 New York residents to win the chance to purchase World Cup 2026 tickets for $50.
New York is soon set to become the hotbed of football as the FIFA World Cup prepares to begin its run.
