Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow costar Emily Blunt shared a fun moment from the movie’s grueling production. In the film, the actress played war hero Rita Vrataski opposite Cruise’s Major William Cage.
Emily Blunt reveals moment when she and Tom Cruise bonded on Edge of Tomorrow set
Emily Blunt has opened up about the moment on the Edge of Tomorrow set that brought her and Tom Cruise closer as costars. In a recent Hot Ones episode, the Sicario actress recalled a standout moment with Cruise. The two were performing a rigorous sequence for their 2014 sci-fi film while suspended on wires.
“We were doing this scene where we were in a drop ship and we’re in those massive armored suits,” Blunt shared. “And when you’re surrounded by Tom Cruise’s enthusiasm, it kind of bleeds in you and you feel like you can’t let him down by complaining about anything. It’s a very powerful force coming off him.”
Emily Blunt, however, admitted that no amount of Cruise’s optimism could help once the exhaustion of shooting in full gear set in. “I’d kind of had it. It was very hot in there. My suit weighed 80 pounds and I’m in a harness being lifted up, so the entire weight of my body — and 85 pounds — is on my nether regions,” she explained. “And I’m not feeling great about it, wondering if I’ll be able to have children one day.”
Eventually, it was obvious that Tom Cruise wasn’t enjoying the situation much either. As they hung there, the Devil Wears Prada star noticed his enthusiasm unraveling and sensed an opening. His frustration with the slow pace of the shoot came out as he shouted, “Please roll!”
Blunt chose that moment to complain to her costar, who gave a very Cruise response. She said the situation sucked, and the Top Gun actor framed it as a challenge. On The Graham Norton Show in 2014, Tom Cruise broke down his famously cool response. Through laughter, he said, “You know what? If I start complaining, it’s on. If I start going down, it’s on.”
