Meghan Markle is facing renewed criticism after launching a new candle through her lifestyle brand As Ever. Royal insiders are accusing the Duchess of Sussex of spreading a “massive lie” about her feelings toward her 2018 royal wedding venue. The controversy erupted after she unveiled a $64 scented candle called Love at First Light, tied to her wedding anniversary with Prince Harry.

The candle is marked with the number 519 in reference to Markle-Harry’s May 19 wedding date. It is being promoted as a tribute to the “ease and joy” of the day they married at St. George’s Chapel inside Windsor Castle. But according to Radar Online, critics quickly pointed to longstanding claims that Markle allegedly complained that the historic chapel smelled “musty” before the ceremony. She also wanted aides to perfume the building before guests arrived.
Meghan Markle introduced the product shortly after celebrating the couple’s eighth wedding anniversary on Instagram. To mark the occasion, she shared 24 previously unseen photographs from the royal wedding festivities. The accompanying As Ever launch framed the candle as deeply personal to Markle. A description on the company’s website stated that the scent was inspired by “the ease and joy of a day that holds Meghan’s most cherished memories.”
Another promotional message described the candle as capturing “warm sunshine and blue skies, surrounded by love and laughter.” The release immediately sparked backlash among some royal commentators, who accused the Duchess of turning one of the monarchy’s most iconic public ceremonies into another commercial product.
The biggest criticism focused on reports that appeared after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s 2018 wedding. Those reports claimed Markle disliked the natural smell inside St George’s Chapel. According to royal insiders, she reportedly felt the historic church smelled stale or damp and did not match the atmosphere she wanted for the globally televised wedding ceremony.
Now, one source claims her new candle branding does not match those earlier reports. “People vividly remember the fuss over the chapel smelling musty,” the insider alleged. “So the idea that Meghan is now selling a candle supposedly inspired by her love of that day feels completely absurd.”
