Donald Trump used parts of his Memorial Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery to honor fallen soldiers, but he also briefly focused on himself by joking about his name and praising recent military operations during the ceremony. The 79-year-old president spoke on Monday at the annual event honoring American service members who died in service. He joined JD Vance and Pete Hegseth in laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Donald Trump boasts about his military prowess during Memorial Day speech
Trump referenced the thousands of service members buried at Arlington while listing some of the most common names found throughout the cemetery. He mentioned Private William Henry Christman, recognized as the first military burial at Arlington, before noting how many soldiers named William, John, and James are buried there. Trump then continued listing names, including “Isaac, Elijah, Earls, Hanks, Helens, Juans, Margarets, Marius, Donalds…” After a brief pause, the president laughed, saying, “Not too many.”
Trump also used the speech to highlight recent military actions carried out during his administration. At one point, he referenced what he described as successful operations in Venezuela and Iran while discussing casualties involving American service members. “In two wars recently, we’ve lost a total of 13 service members,” Trump said before describing Venezuela as “a complete and total victory.” “We took that over in one day. Lost no one,” he added. Trump later paid tribute to the “13 wonderful souls” killed during what he referred to as Operation Epic Fury.
The Memorial Day appearance came amid growing criticism from several Republican lawmakers over Trump’s push for a negotiated agreement with Iran following earlier military action this year. Although Trump claimed over the weekend that a deal was “largely negotiated,” officials within his administration reportedly acknowledged that major disputes remain unresolved, including issues tied to Iran’s nuclear program and enriched uranium stockpile.
