Dev Patel’s Revenge Flick The Peasant Gets Great Release Date Update

Dev Patel‘s upcoming action movie just got an encouraging production update, building anticipation for its release date. The actor last appeared in Bryn Chainey’s Rabbit Trap, alongside Rosy McEwen and Jade Croot.

The Peasant wraps production

The Peasant, a period action-thriller from A24, has wrapped production in India. It is the studio’s first film to be shot in the country. According to Deadline, filming reportedly took place across multiple locations in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh.

Dev Patel helmed it, marking his second directorial venture after 2024’s Monkey Man, which he also co-wrote and starred in. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Will Dunn, whose previous credits include Ms. Marvel. The former also stars alongside Christian Friedel, Sebastian Bull, Saurabh Sachdeva, Anasuya Sengupta, and Vipin Sharma.

“[The film] follows a 14th-century shepherd seeking revenge against mercenaries who ravaged his community. As he hunts them down, his true nature emerges,” the logline reads. As per The Hollywood Reporter, its tone has been likened to Braveheart and John Wick, along with a mashup of King Arthur and the Medieval Knights and feudal India.

The Peasant’s story originally reportedly had an Italian setting, with the protagonist having a pope-related backstory. However, Patel played a key role in shifting the setting to a India. THR further reported that the creatives and producers were hoping the movie could kick off a franchise.

Patel co-produced the feature with A24 — who have bagged the global distribution rights —through his Minor Realm banner, in addition to writing, directing, and starring. Co-producers are Erica Lee, Basil Iwanyk, and Thunder Road Pictures’ Charlie Morrison.

Thunder Road’s involvement marks the second collaboration between the production house and Patel. The former previously produced Monkey Man, which is also a revenge tale.

Making up the executive-producing team of The Peasant are Graham Taylor, Chris Rice, Christopher Slager, and Fifth Season’s Dan Guando. Additional members include Shivani Rawat, Julie Goldstein (ShivHans Pictures), Sherrese Clark, Nijia Kuykendall (HarbourView), and Dunn.
