Jason Alexander leads a packed ensemble in a new indie comedy pilot. Young Sheldon producer David Bickel wrote and directed it independently. Bickel bypassed the traditional studio system to create a single-camera, half-hour comedy that mixes magical realism with an unsettling mystery.
Jason Alexander, Patton Oswalt and more cast in indie comedy pilot To Life
To Life centers on Natalie Lander, who plays an anxiety-ridden woman. She suddenly discovers she can now communicate with inanimate objects, Variety reported. The whimsical premise takes a darker, more mysterious turn as the story unfolds.
In the trailer, according to the outlet, Jason Alexander plays a mental health professional who suggests that Lander’s character should try microdosing hallucinogenic mushrooms to cope with her mother’s death. After she takes a larger dose than recommended, everyday objects in her home grow animated faces. She starts talking to them, and it doesn’t stop even after the effect of the mushrooms wears off.
The cast reads like a who’s-who of beloved television and film. Alongside Alexander and Lander, To Life features Patton Oswalt, Richard Kind, and David Paymer. In addition, John DiMaggio, Patrick Warburton, Jodi Benson, Danny Trejo, and Lainie Kazan, among many others.
Bickel described the tone as “Fleabag meets Search Party.” He was candid about what drove him to go independent. In a statement to Variety, he said, “To Life was born as a reaction to the stagnancy of Hollywood right now. Nothing is getting sold, nothing is getting made, nothing is getting done… So the pivot was: Let’s gather a group of incredibly talented people who were eager to create, and let’s make something together. Something sharp and irresistible. I think we pulled it off — it’s something we’re all incredibly proud of, and we can’t wait to share it.”
To Life’s release date is yet to be announced.
