Netflix subscribers won’t be able to watch a 2016 financial drama led by George Clooney, as it leaves the platform next month. Directed by an Oscar-winning actress, the film centers on a desperate man who takes a financial TV host and his team hostage after losing his life savings in a single stock.
Money Monster leaves Netflix in June
Money Monster will exit Netflix’s streaming library on Monday, June 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).
Jodie Foster, known for her roles in Taxi Driver and The Silence of the Lambs, helmed the film based on a story by Alan Di Fiore and Jim Kouf.
Money Monster follows Lee Gates, the host of a television stock market show of the same name. The events of the film take place one day after the fictional IBIS Clear Capital’s stock suffers a technical glitch, leading to massive losses for its investors.
During Lee’s show the following day, a guy named Kyle sneaks into the studio, holds Lee at gunpoint, and forces him to wear an explosive vest. Soon, Kyle reveals that he lost his life savings of 65,000 after investing in IBIS, which Lee had previously suggested. As tensions rise, Lee and his producer, Patty, begin investigating the company and uncover suspicious activity.
Its cast features George Clooney as Lee, Julia Roberts as Patty, Giancarlo Esposito as Captain Marcus, Jack O’Connell as Kyle, Dennis Boutsikaris as Avery, Dominic West as Walt, and Caitriona Balfe as Diane, among others.
Sony Pictures Releasing handled Money Monster’s global distribution. The film premiered at the 69th Cannes Film Festival on May 12, 2016. It was later released in theaters in the United States on May 13, 2016.
The film seemingly didn’t meet the critics’ and audience’s expectations, which led to less-than-favorable ratings. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a Tomatometer score of 59% and a Popcornmeter score of 51%. IMDb reports a score of 6.5 based on over 110K user votes.
Despite this, Money Monster went on to be a box office success. Made on a reported $27 million budget, the film grossed $93.4 million globally.
