Disney is now in the hot seat after fans questioned the authenticity of Pedro Pascal’s recent Star Wars: The Mandalorian meet-and-greet. Critics are claiming that the heartwarming interaction was staged for the cameras, questioning whether it was genuine at all.
Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian fan surprise sparks fake rumors
Pedro Pascal’s surprise Mandalorian appearance for tourists before Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run has backfired. What Disney framed as heartfelt Star Wars magic is now facing claims that it was fabricated, sparking a PR firestorm online.
In the clip Disney posted on Sunday, May 17, Pascal lifts his Mandalorian helmet as tourists erupt with excitement at meeting the actor behind Din Djarin and Grogu. The Instagram caption read, “Pedro Pascal creates the surprise of a lifetime at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at @disneyland.”
The jaw-dropped tourists, however, weren’t a typical cross-section of Disneyland guests. As fans online quickly pointed out, the group included Star Wars bloggers, influencers, and fan creators. The finding has drawn criticism of Disney’s growing reliance on influencers to generate pre-release hype.
“Urgh. What a staged overreaction,” criticized an Instagram user. “Literally all influencers paid by Disney lol,” echoed another. “I like how they’re pretending those are just normal park guests,” commented a fan. According to one fan site, the fallout from Pedro Pascal’s Disneyland appearance exposes a deeper problem for Disney, as its marketing has lost the audience’s trust.
Having said that, Disney never claimed the group was random tourists. The influencers themselves added transparency by eventually sharing their own accounts of the moment. But Disney’s initial footage and photos gave the impression this was a spontaneous moment. Media outlets ran the story without realizing that the studio had hand-picked the “lucky tourists.”
A source told The Hollywood Reporter that the attendees were genuine Star Wars fans, some with small social media audiences. Disney invited them to preview Smugglers Run updates, making their reaction to Pascal real.
Later, Pascal joined The Mandalorian and Grogu co-star Sigourney Weaver, writer-director Jon Favreau, and Lucasfilm chief Dave Filoni to watch the Shadows of Memory projection show alongside regular park guests.
