NCIS Season 23‘s finale concluded on a big cliffhanger, with two characters finding themselves in a precarious situation. Nick Torres confronted Timothy McGee’s son, Mateo, after becoming suspicious about his application to the investigative agency. Steven D. Binder reveals if Torres or Mateo died in NCIS Season 23 finale

Steven D. Binder offered a vague response when asked about who died or got injured in the NCIS Season 23 finale after a gunshot was fired.

While speaking with TV Insider, the showrunner said, “Someone was hit. I can confirm that. I sort of had my fill this season, all of us, of killing people. So I can rule that out.”

He continued, “And also, there’s not a lot of fun there. When someone’s dead, they’re dead. It’s much more interesting — I’ll think back to when Gibbs shot McGee. It’s much more fun when someone’s alive and been shot than when they’re dead. And by fun, I mean, interesting.”

In the NCIS Season 23 finale, Mateo, played by Patrick Keleher, toured the NCIS building. However, he turned down the cyber internship opportunity and the chance to work for the law enforcement agency, saying it wasn’t for him.

Dr. Jimmy Palmer later informed Torres that Mateo used a workstation to fill out an application. While investigating this, the latter did not find it. Becoming suspicious, Torres confronted Mateo in an alley about this, with the latter urging him to drop it. Revealing he was armed, Mateo warned that they were likely being watched. Subsequently, someone fired a gunshot, but the episode ended before revealing who did it, what happened, or who died because of it.

Viewers will likely find out what exactly happened and who got shot once NCIS returns to the small screen. The show scored a Season 24 renewal earlier this year. It is expected to premiere in the fall as part of the 2026-2027 television season. However, an exact release date hasn’t been set.
