Top Chef semifinals set Season 23 finalists

The latest episode of Top Chef: Carolinas featured the semi-finals. Sherry Cardoso, Laurence Louie, Jonathan Dearden, and Rhoda Magbitang competed for a spot in the finale of the show.

The challenges were difficult. However, all four contestants performed strongly in the semi-finals and presented memorable dishes to the judges. Despite their performances, one contestant was ultimately eliminated.

After the challenges concluded, Jonathan Dearden was eliminated from the competition. Sherry Cardoso, Laurence Louie, and Rhoda Magbitang advanced to Top Chef Season 23 Episode 13.

The four contestants first competed in the final Quickfire Challenge of the season. The challenge featured Tom Colicchio preparing a “Billi Bi” inspired by Spanish flavors. Kristen Kish, Gail Simmons, and Colicchio tasted the dish. The contestants were then tasked with examining and smelling it while asking up to 20 questions to determine what Colicchio had prepared. The contestant who came closest to identifying the dish correctly would win $20,000.

Rhoda won the Quickfire Challenge.

The episode then moved to the Elimination Challenge. The challenge focused on plating and required contestants to serve their dishes on unconventional vessels.

Jonathan made pumpkin seed dinner rolls with pumpkin puree and compound butter, while Laurence made Cheung Fun four ways. Rhoda made grilled ribeye with beet soil, baby carrots and turnips, burnt leek puree, and pickled seaweed, while Sherry made Korean BBQ short ribs, pear kimchi, rice, and banchan.

The episode concluded with Jonathan’s elimination, although the judges also responded positively to his dish.

Top Chef will air its finale next week on Bravo.
