Superman Star’s Underrated Thriller Is Leaving Netflix

A decade-old dark comedy featuring one of the stars of 2025’s Superman movie is set to exit Netflix soon. It is based on a 2008 novel and centers on a music talent scout who takes extreme measures to eliminate his rivals and rise in the ranks.

Kill Your Friends leaves Netflix in May

Kill Your Friends, starring Nicholas Hoult, is departing from Netflix on Friday, May 8, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).

The film is based on a 2008 novel of the same name by John Niven, who also wrote the screenplay. Meanwhile, Owen Harris (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Black Mirror) served as the director.

Kill Your Friends follows Steven Stelfox, a ruthless A&R executive working at a London record label in 1997. Driven by his desire for power, he spends his days scouting new talent for his next big hit. But when the music industry scene begins to shift and his career stalls, he resorts to murder to save his career from crumbling.

The cast features Nicholas Hoult as Steven, James Corden as Roger, Georgia King as Rebecca, Craig Roberts as Darren, Ed Skrein as Danny, Rosanna Arquette as Barbara, and Jim Piddock as Derek, among others.

Kill Your Friends premiered at the 2015 Fantasy Filmfest on August 5. It later had a limited release, arriving in theaters on November 6, 2015. Despite its intriguing premise, the film failed to resonate with audiences.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a low critics’ approval rating of 24% and an audience score of 33%. On Metacritic, the scores are higher, though still in the low range. The film’s page reports a weighted average critics’ score of 45 and a user score of 5.9. Furthermore, even after a decade, the budget of the film has remained under wraps. During its theatrical run, Kill Your Friends reportedly made about $533,147.

Netflix subscribers have a few days left to stream Nicholas Hoult’s film on the platform before its departure.
